Top-notch chilled water coils designed to meet precise specifications, whether for OEM installations or replacements

How Chilled Water Coils Work

Chilled water coils, also known as hydronic cooling coils, serve the purpose of cooling or dehumidifying air streams. These coils facilitate the passage of air to be cooled through finned surfaces, while water or a solution of ethylene or propylene glycol circulates within the tubes. Primarily employed in commercial and industrial air handler units, this technology operates as a heat exchanger.

Water coils in their simplest form have a history spanning centuries. The inception of the first ‘modern’ water-based heat exchanger can be credited to William Blakely in 1796. However, the origins of water tube boilers date back nearly 2,000 years. In today’s world, refrigerant systems have become the prevailing choice for cooling applications.

Hot Water Coil Components Explained

While a chilled water coil consists of relatively few components, it’s beneficial to understand these parts before making a purchase or scheduling a repair. When a coil develops a leak, it typically occurs in the copper U-bends. However, pressurized water can escape at its weakest point, which may be in the middle of a coil, hidden behind the fin pack. When this occurs, repair becomes impractical without damaging the fins, resulting in a significant loss of coil efficiency. Here’s a brief overview of the key components of your coil.

Despite the apparent simplicity of a chilled water coil, you still have choices regarding the materials used. Different materials offer varying levels of performance and longevity
